Forward Paddling technique:
As a sea kayaker I spend most (99%+) of my time paddling forward and, as I get older, I spend more time looking at my technique because fitness and strength is harder to do now!

Sprint paddlers have put a lot of thought into technique and have broken kayak paddle stroke into steps. This video analyses racing technique (on flat water) but the principles could still be applied at sea - even in bumpy conditions ! Paddling Technique by Juan Camilo Peña Zarate

Here's another sprint paddle video...

It is interesting how much the hips rotate in this video and the use of a seat that can rotate with the paddler. The seat in my kayak broke on a recent paddling trip. The nature of the break made me wondered if it was due to pressure put on the seat from hip rotation whilst paddling.

I soooo want to make a smart-arse reply, but I know offence travels better than humour on the interweb.

Yes John, definitely hip rotation that broke your seat ejm ejm

Sorry to bring up the level of debate.

I have seen one case where the back rest is attached to the seat and putting too much pressure from leg push can dislocate the seat.

(and now to revert to form),
I will admit to having spent some time studying the hip movement in the video.
