I'm doing a survey of our club members who use VHF radios to see:

1. How many club members own a VHF radio

2. How many club members who own a VHF radio have a Short Range Certificate

3. How many club members who own a VHF radio have a Ships Radio Licence.

This information is for my own use for CI work I'm doing on VHF radio use. No personal information will be passed on to anyone else.

Please email information to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

As it is a legal requirement for VHF radio operators to hold a certificate of competency (Short Range Certificate for hand held VHF's) please email your response to my questions to me personally so as not to compromise yourself in the event that you do not have a licence.

I do have one, for the record.

I am working with the Coastguard and the RNLI to set up national rescue training for sea kayakers with both organisations (At discussion stage at the moment).

As we rely heavily on VHF radios for communication I'm just curious to know how many certified members we have.

As I said in my initial request I am not giving out personal details about anyone's status.

There’s no requirement for a license in order to own / have a VHF. The license relates only to usage.

The guidelines that are set out on the Irish ships radio licence application form state:

" In accordance with the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926, the appropriate licence must be held to cover possession or use of radio equipment. Possession or use of radio equipment without a licence is an offence, which renders the offender liable to prosecution and, on conviction, fines and confiscation of equipment."

Okay, that’s pretty clear. Looks like you need a license to possess.
