Now is a good time to think about personal training goals for 2020.

Not yet Level 3?
Members who are not yet qualified to Canoeing Ireland (CI) Level 3 Sea Kayak Skills standard or the British Canoeing (BC) Sea Kayak Award level (roughly equivalent to what used to be called 3 Star) are strongly encouraged to work towards achieving either of those awards. Training can be obtained from commercial providers (for example, Tollymore is running Sea Kayak Award training and assessment on 18 and 19 April). Alternatively, our Club might be in a position to provide training to Level 3 standard during the Summer months and might be in a position to assess a limited number of members for that Award in late Summer/early Autumn, but I cannot confirm that yet.
Either way, remember that while the Club supports training and development, members must take ownership of their own training and development. That process starts with deciding on your personal goals for the year.

Already Level 3?
You are encouraged to get more advanced training, which could be CI’s Level 4 Award or BC’s Coastal Sea Kayak Award or Sea Kayak Leader (Moderate Water) Award. People with these Awards (or working towards them) might be interested in becoming trip leaders in the Club. If you are interested in taking this step, talk it over with Michael C. (our Leaders’ Officer) or with any Club Leader.

Already Level 4 or a Leader?
You might consider going for CI’s Level 5 or BC’s Advanced Sea Kayak Leader training. For example, Tollymore is running Advanced Sea Kayak Leader training from 15 -17 May.

Whatever your aspirations, you will need to familiarise yourself with the details of the Award you have in your sights and note any pre-requisite qualifications, like in first aid and navigation. And think about marine radio training too. Some members might be interested in training to be instructors or coaches. Whatever your goal, you should seek out other club members with the same aspirations and network with them to help make your aspirations a reality.

So think about it. Make a plan. And go for it!
