The East Coast Sea Kayaking Club (“the club”) exists in part to provide sea kayaking trips for all members through club meets, led by suitably qualified leaders. The leaders are almost exclusively drawn from the membership of the club and they give their services to the club without financial reward. In order to maintain this system of leadership, for the benefit of all members, the club requires a steady stream of willing and qualified leaders.
To encourage the uptake of training and more importantly assessment, the club offers a limited reimbursement scheme for the costs of both. Without training the club will have no leaders. Whether or not a member eventually becomes a leader, training is beneficial to everyone as it increases the skill level of the kayaking group which enhances safety and makes possible some trips that otherwise would not be so.
All members are encouraged to apply for reimbursement under this scheme where applicable.
Rules of the scheme
Who can claim?
1) All fully paid-up members of the club are entitled to claim for training and assessment reimbursement under the terms of this scheme. Members whose subscriptions to the club are in arrears will not be entitled to claim.
For what can I claim?
2) You can claim in respect of both training and assessment costs for the following courses:
i) ICU personal proficiency (sea kayaking) levels 4 and 5
ii) First aid certificates recognised by the ICU (WFA / REC3)
iii) Marine VHF radio (SRC1 and 2)
3) You can claim in respect of the assessment cost only for the following courses:
i) ICU instructor (sea kayaking) levels 2 and 3
4) You can claim only for training courses attended in full and for assessments which have been passed.
5) Alternative training and assessments which are broadly equivalent in nature and level to those listed above (eg. BCU training) may be eligible for reimbursement and will be judged fairly by the committee on a case by case basis.
How much can I claim?
6) The club will reimburse 100% of the assessment cost and, where applicable, 20% of the training cost.
7) The club will not reimburse money that may be claimed from another organisation (eg. ISKA) in respect of courses or assessments. Where a partial reimbursement is available from another organisation, the amount reimbursed will be reduced as required to ensure that the total received by the applicant from all sources does not exceed the cost of the training or assessment.
How and when should I make a claim?
8) Assessment costs can be claimed immediately after passing the assessment.
9) Claims for first aid or marine VHF radio training only can be made immediately after completion of training. For all other training, costs can be claimed retrospectively, once the applicant has led a minimum of 6 club trips at club meets. Trips led as a trainee leader will also count towards this total.
10) A valid receipt for the training/assessment(s) received must be submitted to the club treasurer in order to claim under this scheme. All claims must be made within 1 year of the date of assessment or training, as applicable.
