There are two possibilities. Firstly, the membership year runs from 1st January to 31st December each year, however full membership is usually granted 12 months after the date of joining. If when you renew it is not 12 months since you first joined, you will be renewed as an associate.

The other possibility is late payment. Subscriptions are due on the 1st January and a significant period of grace of permitted to allow payment. If you did not renew within 3 months of the due date, ie. by the end of March, you are considered to have resigned your membership. If you subsequently pay for the current year, you will be considerd a new member, rather than a renewing member, with the result that you re-join as an associate member.
