youtube video link :(

I was discussing this on the last trip and I had presumed it was from centrifugal forces as the earth and moon orbit each other. But apparently, it is due to the difference in the moon's gravity on opposite sides of the earth.

I got a really interesting, short but dense book recently that not just explains how the tides work, but also goes into why standing waves form just downstream from a shelf, not over it.

I have to recommend Tides, a very short introduction. Bowers and Roberts, Oxford university press.

My understanding was the same as yours Rob but this makes more sense, now to get real nerdy, anyone got a layman's explanation on why the maximum tidal range is two or 3 days after the spring tides, and like wise minimum is a few days after neaps? Its a lag thing?
Check out the Dublin tides this month ?

And spot my mathematical errors ....

3.2 tidal range...:)

The centrifugal is a fake force. It does not exist. It is used as a concept to explain rotating bodies.

An alternate view.
And don't tell me Jason that inertia is another fake.I see evidence of it everywhere I look.
