TOPIC: What's in a name?

Re: What's in a name? 13 years 2 months ago #338

For the purposes of simplifying the name The East Coast could be referred to as Leinster leading to the club being the Leinster sea Kayak club - LSKC

I am a fan of FECK and FECK.eu. (with its associated Feckers - members of Feck) A member of the committee could be known as official of the club and thus entitled to the "Feck Off." title!

Not as daring as that famous Diving club in Lough Swilly near Derry.

However as the clubs main base is effectively Bollock Harbour we could be referred to as "A Load of Bollocks"

I just noticed this topic. If we're going with Leinster, the Leinster Area Coastal Kayakers is descriptive and might not be lacking too much, although the Dublin Union of Coastal Kayakers might be better. The Leinster Union of Sea Kayakers would hardly have people Rushing to vote for it. We could call ourselves the Irish Sea Kayakers Association: should keep the Irish Sea-Kayakers Association wondering. To avoid always looking at things from land, maybe we should describe ourselves as the Western Irish Sea Kayakers (WISKy or WISKers). Or we could call ourselves after a prominent landmark and be the Rockabillies.

'We could call ourselves the Irish Sea Kayakers Association' as suggested by Alan above, might cause confusion as there are people on the other side of the pond who paddle on the Irish Sea, and our name should also make clear that the club is for Sea-kayaking, not kayak surfing etc.
So after all that, we end up with The Irish Irish Sea Sea- Kayakers Association.
That's it, all sorted.

That's all very well, Conal, but shouldn't we then say the Irish Irish Sea Sea Kayakers' Kayaking Association, to make it clear that it's not our tiddly-wink playing arm?

Eblana is the name given by Claudius Ptolemaeus, a Roman cartographer, to a coastal settlement in the Dublin area about 140AD. Referred to by Joyce in Finnegans Wake, as sung by the Dubliners in the Humpty Dumpty Song:

Sweet bad luck on the waves washed to our island
The hooker of that hammerfast viking
And Gall's curse on the day when Eblana bay
Saw his black and tan man-o'-war.

Eblana Bay allows us to claim an ancient tradition, locates us firmly in our native seascape, and gives us a rollicking club anthem to boot.
