Multi-factor authentication is now available for all users as a method of improving security on your account. You're already used to having to enter a password and that doesn't change.
When enabled, you'll be asked to also enter a six-digit verification code generated by an authenticator app on your phone. This additional security check makes it extremely difficult for a third-party to access your account unless they're also in possession of your unlocked phone. For some users multi-factor authentication is mandatory.
Setting up multi-factor authentication
1. You'll need an authenticator app on your phone to proceed. There are many available. Instructions for Microsoft and Google authenticators are shown at the bottom of this page. Install it first, then proceed here.
2. After entering your password you'll be presented with this dialogue. If you've not yet set it up, click "select a different method".
3. Choose verification code
4. Click add a new verification code.
5. Open your chosen authenticator app on your phone. Click the option to add a new account, often a '+' symbol.
6. Scan the QR code with your phone.
7. Once the app has read the code and added your account, you'll be presented with a code. Enter it in the box under the QR code and click "save".
8. As an emergency backup you'll be presented with a list of one-time-use "backup codes" that are specific to your account. You can use a backup code as an alternative to get in if your authenticator app is unusable for any reason.
Next time you log in you'll be asked for a verification code. Just go straight to your authenticator app, read the code and enter it. That's it!
