Once you are happy with surfing straight try carving from side to side a little. To do this use a rudder-brace, a combination between a stern rudder and a low brace, this gives you steerage when you need it and support when you need it. To do this lean onto the paddle and edge into the turn. As you keep making small changes in direction you will slow the boat down keeping it high on the wave. In this position the boat is far more manoeuvrable however it can be very easy to drop off the back of the wave. Don’t limit yourself to just surfing straight, try experimenting and you will find a sea kayak is capable of a lot more.

…and for support.
